Traditions weigh on China’s women

According to the statistics China has the largest number of women committing suicide and 150,000 succeed in doing so. As per the statistics rural women are the majority of them. The reasons are the availability of poisons in agricultural areas, as well as the arranged marriage which is operated like business deals buying the bride; that leads to the emotional problems for young wives to enter an alien environment of the groom which means gaining everyone's acceptance in the family. As a saying among China’s men 'marrying a woman is like buying a horse: I can ride you and beat you whenever I like'. In addition, when the husband senses his wife is unwilling to be with him, he tries building a reason for arguments and violence.

This is the direct reason to attempt suicide; China’s women think of it as a way of asking for better treatment from, and to gain some sort of dignity from, their husbands.

The government acted in a serious way by forming an organization that helps to prevent attempting suicides and provides small projects like support groups which discuss their feelings, receive information on mental health, including classes on marriage, suicide prevention and gender awareness.

Main Idea

Traditions in China are underestimating women, which lead them to commit suicide.

Opinion

· In my opinion, they should create some kind of awareness in the parents.
· I think that there has to be some kind of law on selling the poison since it is the main factor.
· They should encourage young women to stand up for their rights.
· They must make the women contribute in their production and business as men do.
